Remote Access to EPSS Networks- RDP Edition

• A static IP address — request from help@epss.ucla.edu (graduate students should also email their advisor or lab PI)
• An account on the Windows machine you wish to log into
• A UCLA Logon ID (required for VPN access)
• A computer you own with the Microsoft Remote Desktop client installed (public computers such as library machines must remain powered on at UCLA)

To access the EPSS network from off campus, tunnel your connection through the UCLA VPN.

1. Install and configure the UCLA VPN (Cisco AnyConnect).
2. Connect with your UCLA Logon ID and password, then approve the Duo prompt.

On the machine you will access remotely, enable Remote Desktop. This must be done at the machine itself, not remotely. Remote Desktop is off by default on Windows 10 and later.

1. Open Start > Settings and search for Remote Desktop.
2. Click Remote Desktop Settings.
3. Turn Enable Remote Desktop to On and confirm with OK.
4. Turn ON Keep my PC awake for connections when it is plugged in.
5. Turn OFF Make my PC discoverable on private networks to enable automatic connection from a remote device.

1. Obtain the static IP from the helpdesk for the computer you want to connect to (for example, 169.232.144.244 or 128.97.31.89).
2. To find your machine’s IP locally, open a command prompt (search for CMD from the Start menu), type ipconfig, and press Enter.
3. Look for the Ethernet adapter section and note the IPv4 address.

You also need the Windows username and password you use on site. Find the username under Start > Settings > Accounts. Write credentials on paper for safekeeping.

1. Open the Remote Desktop client on the computer you are connecting from (macOS users can download it from the App Store).
2. On-campus testing only: connect to the PhySciOpen Wi‑Fi network to simulate an off-campus connection. eduroam is not reliable for this test and may cause false positives.
3. Connect to the UCLA VPN first (see step 2).
4. In the Computer (or PC name on macOS) field, enter the IP address from step 4.
5. Click Show options.
6. Enter the Windows username from step 4.
7. Optionally select Allow me to save credentials — only on a personal off-campus computer you control.
8. If you see a certificate warning, you can ignore it.
9. You should see a full-screen view of your remote computer.
